巴特,原文是「我所主張的是充分地活於我之時代的矛盾」(live to the full the contradiction of my time),而引用時,陳冠中把「活於」改成了「活出」(living out the contradiction of our time)。

Fragile China

By HOWARD W. FRENCH

Wall Street Journal 2012-2-4

What becomes of a nation when it attains its long-harbored goal of surpassing the world's longtime economic leader?

Recent history offers two imperfect but instructive examples. In the early 20th century, Kaiser Wilhelm's Germany interpreted its sprint past Britain as license to reshape the world in its image—by force.

Several decades later Japan began conquering the world with its goods, briefly surpassing the U.S., at least in per capita nominal GDP. This pro......

Charles Foran of Globe and Mail reviews The Fat Years

An audacious view of a counterfeit paradise reviewed by charles foran From Saturday's Globe and Mail, Toronto Published Friday, Jan. 27, 2012 4:00PM EST

The great essayist and story-writer Lu Xun spoke of his nation’s tendency to feel collective nostalgia for a “lost good hell.” The impulse among Chinese, Lu remarked, was to forever gaze backward, no matter how awful the past, for fear of having to confront a present that is a hell of its own active variety.

In The Fat Years, possibly the most audacious book to have been published by a Chinese author not living in exil......

Chan Koon-chung's new book is making waves among mainland intellectuals for its eerily realistic fictional account of a modern, prosperous China - and its veiled criticism of those who buy into it

It's the year 2013 and China is stronger and richer than ever before, while the rest of the world is still reeling fro......

'The Fat Years': China's Brave New World by Michael Schaub

National Public Radio, USA

January 12, 2012

Toward the end of Aldous Huxley's 1932 classic Brave New World, the character John the Savage tries to explain why he's rejecting the artificial utopia that the world has become. Pretty much everyone on the planet is drugged, complacent and happy — but for John, that's the problem. "I don't want comfort," he says......

The Fat Years

By Chan Koonchung

Translated by Michael S.Duke, Introduction by Julia Lovell

Doubleday 307pp

This creepy novel frightened me several times. Here is how Chan

Koonchung, raised in Hong Kong but now living in Beijing, does it: he

sets the story in a very near future, 2013, that closely resembles

China today, but with two creep-producing additional elements: an

entire month, during 2011, has vanished from almost all written

records, and almos......

Time-Out Beijing on The Fat Years and Chan Koonchung

The Fat Years Chan Koonchung is the author of China's most talked about new novel.

by Clarissa Sebag-Montefiore

Time Out Bejing, July 2011

Chan Koonchung, author of the hottest novel to come out of China this year, suggests we meet at Starbucks in The Place. Grasping our branded coffees, we settle under the ubiquitous green umbrellas. Stretching above us is The Place’s gargantuan outdoor screen. I’m delighted. For what could be a more fitting location to discuss ......
